Why is this happening?
The reason behind this new algorithm is that Instagram wants to promote its advertising system. The old algorithm supported bloggers and creators in getting maximum reach on their posts due to which they did not have to pay money to Instagram and use its advertising feature. The old algorithm helped creators in getting more reach organically, which is not the case now.

Instagram wants businesses to use their advertising feature and pay for it in order to get more reach and promote their products and services. This is the only reason why Instagram has come up with this new algorithm.

What can be done to avoid getting less reach?
